I decided to make the forward gun
turret out of Balsa, it should be easier to shape, I will then
hopefully make a fibre glass mould from this. (28th October 2008) |

Building up the shape with different thicknesses of Balsa |

Putting the curves on the turret. |

The rear section of the boat is coming
together as shown in the photographs below. (2nd
November 2008) |
The photograph to the left shows the
transom section of HMS Kent |
For the first time both the forward
and rear sections get laid together showing the overall length. |
I went over to see Ray Milliken to see
how he was getting on with the running gear, the rudder assembly
is a work of art, and now just waiting to be fitted to the hull.
Ray has also started to work with the propellers and worked out
how to set them up so they don't drop off while under way. (12th
November 2008) |
The photograph to the left and right
show the rudders, currently held in a vice, roll on the day they
are fitted to our model. |
The photograph to the right show one
of the propellers drilled through to ensure a secure fit. |
The next set of photographs show the
forward gun nearing completion, the mechanics now work, just have
to get the water flowing through and finish off the encasement.
The water feed pipe is a bit thick and needs to be thinner as it's
acting as a spring at the moment. |
To the left you can see the 4:1 gear
ratio which provide a 180° degree movement. The cam has now
been fitted that allows the up and down movement, a better picture
tot eh right. To the far right the encasement gets a lick of
resin to harden it up to allow more detail and filling to be
added. |

Every time I see the hull it has been
transformed in a major way, it's hoped within the next week or so
to finish off the planking and begin the processes of filling and
sanding, prior to laminating.(14th
November 2008) |
To the far left the planking coming up
to the bow, and the next picture is taken from within the hull.
The pictures to the right show the forward and aft sections of the
hull |
The hull today received it's first
coat of resin, it took 650 gram's to coat the inside and centre
bulkheads. |
As can be seen from the photographs
below and above the outside has had its first sanding and the gaps
between planks filled, there are still a few gaps to go. The
forward gun encasement has been filled to take out the joints and
imperfections and is ready for sanding. (22nd
November 2008) |
