From time to time it is necessary to archive parts of the
website to make room for more recent editorial and photographs,
however it is recognised that there is a need to keep
information and therefore the older pages have been converted to

Sunday 25th May dawned
with steady rain and not much breeze and it was still raining
when the organisation team arrived at Mote Park at about 9
o'clock. The decision was made to "hold fire" with the final
buoy placement until members of AMBO arrived - we had already
assessed that all we needed to do was to move one buoy to create
an 'M' course.
Members from AMBO started to arrive from approximately 9.45 am ,
the rain had stopped, and we proceeded to finalise the course
and put the rescue boat on standby. Eventually some 9 skippers
from AMBO arrived and after the traditional greetings and
briefing racing got underway by about 10.30 am.
During the course of the next four and a half hours, including
their traditional lunch break, some seven races took place.
There were three for Bowsprits and the same number for
staysails. Secondary classes, with only one entry in each, were
included in the main races. The seventh race was an "all in"
whereby skippers raced, in their opinion, their best boat - this
race was however aborted after one lap because the attrition
rate meant that there very few boats left on the water.
After the traditional "thank yous" and a reminder that we shall
see them again at the end of September our visitors departed and
the Cygnets "crew" tidied up and made their way home.
Again the weather played an important part on the day - the
early rain possibly keeping the number of skippers down and the
later lack of wind meant that many of the skippers present
endured frustrating times trying to coax their barges around the
course.
Why is it that whenever a yacht, or in this case a barge, race
in recent times is to be held at Mote Park the wind dies and the
lake becomes a "mill pond" - I do not know but its b.....y
frustrating for all concerned. But what I will say was that it was
"a very good job" that it was not held on the previous Saturday
or the Bank Holiday Monday because the reverse would have
happened and the barges would have been flattened. Oh happy
days!!!!???
Finally a big thank you to the AMBO skippers who made the
journey to Maidstone and to Nick, Anthony, Alan and Richard who
assisted me with the setting up and the tidying up afterwards.
Thanks guys
